Marcel Bakker is a portrait photographer (editorial and commercial). He creates or searches for the right light and atmosphere to give his portraits an unusual subtle quality. He can create powerful portraits as well as light playful unposed images. He wants his subjects to be genuine and strives for an honest authentic reflection. Apart from commissions Marcel works on personal reportages which involve his anthropological background. His work is inspired by non-fiction or academic literature and often has a historical or cultural angle. He has a special interest in living history, in people and places where tradition meets modernity and in the interaction between humans and animals. Before starting his career as a photographer, Marcel worked as a photo editor and artdirector for Amnesty International, Associated Press and several Dutch magazines (soccer magazine Johan, De Groene Amsterdammer, the magazine of the Ministry of Justice, Intermediair and Sprout). During his studies in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, Marcel was co-founder and editor-in-chief of the student faculty magazine Cul!
