Too many cattle are overgrazing the soil in the south-east of Ethiopia. And where trees used to grow, people have collected the wood to make fires. Here you can now only find desertland. The cattle are dying from a devastating drought. Everywhere carcases of dead animals are littering the soil. Most herdsmen do not have any other form of income. In many areas two-thirds of the population are reliant for survival on food aid. Across the Horn of Africa, at least 11.5 million people need aid after a decade of low rainfall.
