Men unloading a shark in a fishing boat at a dock in Kochi. India is one of the largest shark fishing nations of the world. The sharks are not only caught by IndiaàƒÂ¢à‚€à‚â„¢s own fleet, but also by foreign industrial fleets who throw the live shark at sea after cutting fins. These practices have resulted in the plundering of the Indian Ocean and the over fishing and decline of the shark population. In 2001 the Government of India banned harvesting of nine sharks species, but as no one can differentiate between these nine species and the other, all sharks continue to be killed.
