Slum behind Delhi`s World Health Organization building in the city center. A few hundred families live here on a small plot. They have one sanitary block which is poorly maintained. People prefer to defecate next to an open sewer. The urban population has risen ten times over the last century and is now the second largest after China. The majority of the migrants are illiterate and belong to lower castes, and thus have access only to low-income jobs. They are automatically excluded from the safer, higher-valued sites in the cities and have no option but to live in overcrowded slum areas. In the 1,100 slums of New Delhi, tap water is either non-existent, or the water is running only a few hours a day.
Sloppenwijk in de hoofdstad New Delhi. Ongeletterden uit het platteland komen zich hier vestigen in de hoop werk te vinden. In de 1100 slums van Delhi zijn de sanitaire voorzieningen ontoereikend. In deze slum is er maar een sanitaire blok voor tientallen families. De mensen verkiezen hun behoeften buiten te doen naast een open riool. Kraantjeswater is vaak onbestaande. Als er al een netwerk voorzien is, dan loopt het water vaak maar een paar uur per dag.

Ce sont surtout des pauvres analphabetes qui quittent l`interieur du pays pour chercher une meilleure vie dans les villes. Souvent ils habitent des quartiers pauvres sans structures de sanitaires ou systeme d`alimentation en eau potable. Dans ce slum ci il y a qu`un seul bloc sanitaire pour des dixaines de familes. Les habitants preferent faire leurs besoins a l`exterieur a cote d`un egout.
