- Africa, Burundi, April 2009 The family Rusange from Gisuru province Ruyigi has two daughters with a multiple handicap. The oldest Buhwiriri 21 got paralyzed on the left side of her body after she received a vaccination when she was a kid. Her body is full of burn wounds because she doesnàƒÂ¢à‚€à‚â„¢t feel the heat when she gets too close to a fire. Her younger sister Muburo 15 is also handicapped and canàƒÂ¢à‚€à‚â„¢t stretch her legs and arms. Her mother calls her her bat because she is so small and always sits in a collapsed position. A community based rehabilitation program of Handicap International is now taking care of the family. A community worker encourages the parents to take care of their daughters. The daughters used to be left naked in the house and Muburo received nearly any food. Today the girls are receiving a better hygiene and are sometimes taken outside.
