The Albino Revolution Cultural Troupe ARCT is composed of 12 members. Theyàƒâ€¢re all albinos. It was created in 2000 by Tito David Ntanga, an artist. They organize musical and theatre performances at conferences, meetings and cultural events. They have already campaigned around issues like HIV/AIDS and civil rights and are now campaigning against the stigmatization and killings of albinos. Since January, about 30 albinos have been killed in Tanzania , their parts wanted by witchdoctors for so-called get-rich potions. ARCT aims to educate people about albinism: tell their audiences who they are, that albinos have no skin pigment, but that apart from this handicap albinos are human beings like any other human being, and, finally, that God will punish those who kill albinos.
Discrimination against albinos is a serious problem throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but recently in Tanzania albinos have been killed and mutilated, victims of a growing criminal trade in albino body parts. Albinos have a genetic condition that impairs normal skin pigmentation and strikes about 1 in 3,000 people here. They are often shunned as outcasts and most die of skin cancer before they reach 30.
