Maasai herder with cattle on a plateau in the area of the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater Highlands are a region along the East African Rift in Tanzania, located at the intersection of branches of the African and Somali tectonic plates. Part of it, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Land in the conservation are is multi-use, it is unique in Tanzania as the only conservation area providing protection status for wildlife whilst allowing Maasai habitation.

Een Maasai herder op stap met zijn vee op een hoogvlakte nabij de Ngorongoro krater. De Ngorongoro Conservation Area in het noorden van Tanzania is een gebied waar het Maasai volk en wildgedierte vreedzaam naast elkaar leven. Het unieke landschap dat getekend wordt door vulkanen, kraters en zoutmeren is beschermd door Unesco als werelderfgoed.
